LMU supports this years iGEM Munich team / Students from LMU and TUM are tackling challenges of molecular recording: The iGEM Munich 2024 team is a collaboration of students from LMU and TUM, with diverse backgrounds in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and engineering. Under the supervision of Prof. Gil Westmeyer, this year's iGEM Munich team is tackling the challenges of molecular recording. Their ambitious project focuses on developing a novel, customizable system for RNA-based cellular recording. This new technology promises real-time monitoring of cellular events, with applications from oncology and pathology to developmental biology. The iGEM (international genetically engineered machine) competition, which originated at MIT in Boston, challenges university teams around the world to tackle global problems using modern synthetic biology solutions. Participating teams develop original ideas by combining computational and experimental work. Beyond the lab, they organise outreach events to promote scientific engagement and communication. The culmination of this scientific journey is the annual Grand Jamboree. Teams from all continents come to Paris to present their projects to a jury of more than 400 experts.
